Irish companies and teachers can avail of bespoke training in additive manufacturing and 3D printing technologies from the WIT-based group 3DWIT

Training in 3D printing for both industry and education is now being offered by Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT) in response to the educational requirements of industries looking to adopt this rapidly developing technology to meet the needs of the developing manufacturing sector within Ireland.

Hosted by the renowned South Eastern Applied Materials (SEAM) research centre in WIT, 3DWIT is a specialised group established to provide unique hands-on training in the field of additive manufacturing, also known as 3D printing.

Bespoke training

3DWIT provides a range of bespoke additive manufacturing (AM) training modules with a focus on the needs of the industrial client and how they might utilise AM technology. All courses are designed to be hands-on using the state-of-the-art training lab based in WIT. The lab hosts a range of AM processes, software licences to a range of AM software, as well as a wide range of post processing equipment. These courses can be delivered in-person at the customer’s site, in the 3DWIT training lab or remotely via MS Teams or Zoom. To date, 3DWIT has provided various training courses to a number of organisations across a diverse cohort of sectors based in Ireland and abroad.

3D printing training for secondary schools

Last year 3DWIT in partnership with I-Form, the Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) AM Research Centre and Junior Cycle for Teachers (JCt), received funding under the SFI Discover Programme to provide training in 3D printing to teachers in the field of technology and engineering.

This was in response to the increased attention on the 3D printing process within the second level curriculum. The first of this training was delivered to teachers online with a formal virtual launch held on 19 January 2021.

Advancing second level education

Dr Ramesh Raghavendra, founder of 3DWIT and Director of SEAM, comments on the success of the team and the courses to date “I am thankful to I-Form and JCt for enabling this partnership that provides teachers with the knowledge of how to use the 3D printing process to address the learning outcomes of the second level students curriculum. We aim to offer this training nationwide throughout 2021 and early 2022”.

3DWIT’s training is not only limited to industrial clients and JCt,  the expertise in the area of AM within 3DWIT is being shared with the general public and students of engineering courses within the School of Engineering in WIT. To date, this specialised training has been instrumental in preparing WIT students for employment, giving them the edge over other graduates and providing them with knowledge and understanding of this developing technology.
